When it comes to reasons they should not consider themselves ministers of the gospel, most female pastors have heard it all. Reasons range from the most popular: “God placed man as the head and women are to have no authority over them.” to “Women are the weaker vessel and cannot become strong and effective leaders.”

“It's sad to say, but there are still a lot of people who don't believe in women in ministry and women as pastors,” says Apostle Margaret McGhee, pastor of New Horizon Church and It's Ministries, Inc. in Fordyce, Arkansas. “Some still feel like it's (the Church) not a place for women leaders and that men should always be in authority.”

Since awareness of this issue is gaining attention both regionally and nationally, some female church leaders feel that now is the time that their voices should be heard. In fact, seven women: Dr. Barbara Bouie, Dr. Debra Brewer, Cynthia Azogini, Minister Debra Edwards, Reverend Barbara Rogers, Apostle Margaret McGhee, and Reverend Cathy Hunt, have made plans to be seen and heard.

"We are so grateful for the encouragement and support of Rev. Cooper and others at The Foundation of the Mid South, they are serving as members of a special steering committee that will hold kick-off rallies at 11 a.m. Oct. 7 in Florence, Mississippi; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and Pine Bluff, Arkansas. The purpose of the rallies is to celebrate women in ministry and to raise funds to support VLI programs and activities.

VLI, which strengthens the knowledge, competence, and effectiveness of clergy leaders in small and medium-sized congregations to serve as well-rounded spiritual guides, worship leaders, preachers, teachers, counselors, administrators, economic developers and civic leaders, launched an initiative for women in ministry in 2004. The Institute's first woman in ministry leadership conference was held in Brookhaven with 90 participants. The Mid South Gathering of Women in Ministry Leadership, “Yet, Still I Rise,” has grown to more than 400 participants.
