BUILDING AND PROTECTING WEALTH IN THE MID SOUTH
Today, Mid Southerners and other Americans are experiencing difficult economic times. The Foundation has worked for several years to promote tools and programs to help Mid Southerners build wealth and become more financially secure. With tax day around the corner, we've highlighted some news, services, and tax credits available to eligible Mid Southerners, including the following:
- Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)—a tool for low-income working individuals and families
- Government's Economic Recovery Package wealth and asset impacts
- Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites throughout the region provide FREE tax help to low-and moderate-income taxpayers to determine eligibility and to file the claim for the EITC
- FMS awards grants to the Mid South's three statewide asset building coalitions

GRANT AWARDED IN LEFLORE COUNTY, MS, FOR YOUTH LEADERSHIP INITIATIVE
FMS awarded a three-year grant totaling $90,100 to the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce through its Communities of Opportunity (COO) Initiative. The grant award will reinstate the Young Emerging Leaders of Leflore (YELL) youth leadership program. More details?

DISCUSSIONS ON BLACK MALES TAKE ROOT IN REGION
The Foundation for the Mid South recently released Black Male, a report focusing on the status of African-American males in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Since its release, the report has prompted a number of articles, blog entries, and dialogue across the region and beyond focusing on the disparities facing black males. Today, The Advocate published an article about black on black crime, "Baton Rouge Seeks a Solution," that often cites findings included in the report.
