The newly named Visionary Leadership Institute - formerly the Mid South Faith-Based Development Center - is designed to build a pastoral leadership program for churches that serve low-income communities while reaching pastors and congregations across racial, social, and gender lines.

In 1994, the Foundation joined other funders across the United States to open dialogue between philanthropists and faith leaders. One outcome was a $2 million investment from the Lilly Endowment made in 2003 to the Foundation to help support the work of the Institute.

The Visionary Leadership Institute works to strengthen the capacity - namely, the knowledge, competence, and effectiveness - of clergy leaders in small and medium-sized congregations to serve as well-rounded spiritual guides, worship leaders, preachers, teachers, counselors, administrators, economic developers, and civic leaders.
