: : cOMMUNITIES OF OPPORTUNITY
One of the Foundation's community development activities, Communities of Opportunity (COO) is a place-based comprehensive community development effort currently in two Delta counties: St. Francis County, Arkansas, and Leflore County, Mississippi. COO brings together all of the Foundation's activities and expertise in a specific geographic area to effect change in the issues FMS is most concerned about: economic development, education, community development, health and wellness, wealth building, and leadership development.
The Foundation supports efforts that enable communities to transform themselves from within and become self-sustainable. The overarching goal is to create a long-term, asset-based, resident-driven community change model in these two Delta counties. Residents are fully involved in determining the best ways to improve the quality of life in their communities.
Significant private contributions and investments, like those from the Walton Family Foundation, assist these communities in bringing together ideas and developing implementation strategies in order to improve the community.
